Fireplace safety information available
Even when the fixtures aren't in use, fireplaces can be some of the most dangerous places a child can go. Dust and debris accumulate there even in homes that are cleaned daily. Logs and tinder, matches and even doors are dangerous areas for children, and no matter how many times you tell them not to play there, a child's curiosity is likely to get the best of them.
- Matches
- Lighting equipment
- Heavy logs
- Fireplace tools
These are all dangerous for children. For fireplace safety, first, keep matches or lighters out of a child's reach. Keep them on top of a high mantle or in a locked cabinet rather than out in an open area. Second, keep extra wood on a deck outside the home. This way a child can't use the small pieces to build or stack, possibly hurting themselves. Finally for fireplace safety, ensure the burning area is off limits by installing a sliding glass lock so that the doors cannot be opened.
Keep all of the rooms in your house safe from hazards. Our bathtub safety rails are a great addition to your family's bathroom. Also, in the kitchen, be sure to complete your safe home with a drawer lock magnet.
Learn about stair safety
Nearly every home has stairs of some kind. In some cases, the only steps are outside the home - leading up to a deck or onto a front porch. However, more and more homes are built in several levels, leaving many different sized stairwells to child-proof. For stair safety, the best advice is to install child-proof gates. Especially for crawlers and toddlers, putting gates at the head and foot of a staircase is the best way to keep a child off the steps and on solid ground. Falling down a staircase, even a relatively small set of three or fewer stairs, can cause a broken arm or an injured neck so from the time a baby is moving around independently, these fixtures should be in place. These gates aren't only for stair safety. In many cases, gates can be installed in doorways as well, to keep a child out of an especially dangerous room such as a kitchen or a sitting area with many breakables or glass ornaments.
